Skin type is somewhat of a vague subject around the beauty world in that sense that things are marketed to certain skin types but no ones tells us how to know if we have dry skin or oily skin. Now, if you've never really paid much attention to your skin type, there are a couple things you should consider then never stop paying attention to these things. How does your skin feel right now when you touch it? How does it feel without any product? Skin type plays a big role in what you purchase and in knowing what will work best for you. I've created a chart for you to know how to tell your skin type. The best way to tell, is to wash your face and wait an hour before touching your face with any kind of product, watch your skin and pay attention to how it reacts. Below, I will provide guidelines to help you.
"When I wash my face and wait 30 minutes to an hour, my skin feels tight, has some flakes or signs of dryness. Feels mostly dry in my t-zone (chin, nose, forehead area)." If this describes you, you are most likely a dry skin type.
"When I wash my face and wait 30 minutes to an hour, my skin is shiny and greasy. Especially in my t-zone. I am prone to breakouts and I have larger pores" If this describes you, you are most likely an oily skin type.
"When I wash my face and wait 30 minutes to an hour, my skin is seemingly oilier in my t-zone than my cheeks. I occasionally experience light breakouts." If this describes you, you are most likely a combination skin type. This is the most common skin type but it can be tricky to care for, finding a balance is important.
"When I wash my face and wait 30 minutes to an hour, my skin feels good and even. Not too dry, not too oily." If this sentence describes you, you are most likely a normal skin type. You may experience more hormonal breakouts.
"When I wash my face and wait 30 minutes to an hour, it feels quite tight and irritated. I tend to be prone to redness and inflammation. Sometimes, my skin feels itchy if I use something new or different." If this describes you, you most likely have sensitive skin and tend to react to products that others do not usually show sensitivity with.
Dry skin: Creme cleanser
Oily skin: Gel cleanser
Acne: Foam cleanser
Sensitive skin: Cleansers for this skin type come in different textures and types. Patch testing is important but ingredients are key
Combination: Creme
Normal: Any. I suggest creme in the winter months and a gel in the summer
Each cleanser is created to fulfill needs the skin cannot fill on its own, Creme cleansers are created to clean and nourish the skin where it is dry, while gel cleansers are used to clean the skin and dry any excess oil that may be lying on the surface, and foam cleansers give the skin a feeling of cleanliness without leaving behind any residue that could possibly clog the pores and cause a breakout.
You may also notice how many different brands are making masques now. Masking has always been a favorite hobby of mine but when you have 1000's of different options to choose from, things can seem quite overwhelming and not fun at all. Keep in mind that like cleansers, masks are created to target certain problems you may be experiencing in your day to day life but know which mask is for what is the challenge beyond just what the label may say.
Clay & charcol: Suitable for oily or combination skin types
Peel off masks: Great for acneic skin, help remove blackheads
Cream masks: Great for hydrating dry skin
Gel masks: Also great for dry and sensitive skin
Sheet masks: Ideally for all skin types
Exfolating masks: For most skin types -opt for an enzyme mask if you have sensitive skin
I hope this quick guide helps you in purchasing better products. The more you buy products that cater to your skin type, the more you will notice less breakouts. Remember, consistency is key and everyone can benefit from an occasional facial, at least once a month to maintain skin health and a routine. Please feel free to comment on this post if you would like me to post about my product recommendations for every skin type.
With love and light,
Bruklin
